Means of Mass Communication of Falun Dafa NGOs: manipulative-linguistic impact on society

Reason for research: Letter of the Institute of Social and Political Psychology of APS of Ukraine from 08.04.2010 № 02-15/122-2 to participate in the international round table "Information-psychological security of individuals, society and the state: situations, problems and solutions".

Objectives: to provide reliable analytical information regarding the application of linguistic manipulation technologies in the means of mass communication (hereinafter referred to as MMC) of Falun Dafa NGOs.

Research tasks:
• monitoring of Falun Gong movement MMC concerning the presence of linguistic technology impact on mass consciousness;
• analysis of Falun Gong movement MMC concerning the use of untruthful data in communicative and information area for manipulation purposes;
• development of recommendations on the communicative counteraction against manipulative impact of Falun Dafa movement in the post- Soviet information space.

Methods of research: content analysis, discourse analysis, conceptual analysis, analysis of the resonant events, the association experiment.
Research facilities: desk study.

Theoretical basis of study

Information and communication society, like no other before, is subject to manipulative influence.

The influence of the information field on individual and social consciousness is a significant factor in formation of identity and community, allowing to predict the behavior of members of society. In critical periods for development of society the manipulative activities of various destructive organizations, including religiously oriented, become more active.

The average consumer of information, according to statistics, spends a lot of time in front of TV, listens to the radio for about 4 hours daily and uses Internet even longer. This time is quite enough for qualified "dirty" technologies specialists to mould in the minds of viewers and listeners with the help of audio and video portion some views wanted by customers, even if these views conflict with reality.

The effectiveness of information manipulation is determined by the percentage of suggestible persons. Modern survey technology allows to determine the estimated percentage, which, of course, depends on several factors: the art of programming, advertising intensity and duration, nature of suggestible information, psychological state and general awareness of recipients, as well as the quantity of alternative information sources which were used. Interactive telephone surveys of Ukrainian viewers and listeners who call at the stations, show that the appropriate views can be suggested to a fairly high percentage of participants – from 50 to 75%. More correct public opinion polls, in which all segments of the population are proportionally represented, give a smaller percentage of suggestible persons: up to 30-40% of the total adult population. Approximately the same is the percentage of people suggestible in medical experiments with the "phony” drugs treatment.

In information and communication society very diverse technologies of consciousness manipulation based on linguistic knowledge have developed. They are actively used by various destructive organizations.

Advertising - any paid form of impersonal representation, promotion of ideas, product ideas, goods or services in the name of a well-known sponsor.

Sales promotion - activities for the implementation of commercial and creative ideas that promote the sale of products or services of advertisers, often in a short period of time.

Product placement - hidden advertising technology, embedding brands in movies, television serials, fiction, mostly detective stories.

Propaganda –technology of information influence on mass consciousness as a means of ensuring political, social, psychological and economic benefits.

NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) – manipulation by human consciousness with the help of linguistic technologies, coding of consciousness.

PR (Public Relations) - a conscious organization of communication, which aims at achieving mutual understanding and establishing fruitful relations between the organization and its audiences through two-way communication.

Currently, in the PR activity of destructive organizations different directions are distinguished, the main condition for realization of which is based on the manipulation of linguistic structures:

• work on relations with governmental agencies and community organizations - public affairs;
• management of corporate image - corporate affairs;
• creating a favorable personality image of the movement leader - image making;
• building relationship with media - media relations;
• consolidation of personnel, establishment of good relations with staff - employee communications;
• relations with investors - investor relations;
• conducting mobilization and presentation arrangements - special events;
• conducting crisis - crisis management;
• managing the process of adequate message perception by audience - message management.

In recent years the role of PR-technologies in the world has changed significantly. System of knowledge, which originally was supposed to work on achieving mutual understanding and cooperation, productive communication between two sides, currently is used for destructive purposes. Actively developed "point" PR technologies are used for manipulative purposes: terrorism PR, fascism PR ,PR of destructive religious organizations, etc.

Communicative actions of Falun Gong movement may be characterized as aggressive public relations: a special system of information (including social) management, if the management is understood as a process of establishing information occasions and information of the party concerned, dissemination of finished information products by means of communication in order to mould desirable public opinion. In addition, the PR-actions of Falun Gong movement can be categorized as black PR, as they are based on deliberately misleading, false information. Black PR is based "on three pillars":

• psychological unpreparedness and illiteracy of population;
• sharp negative communicative background;
• actual impunity of PR campaigns customers ;

We conduct our research on the basis of an integrated author methodology, including a number of techniques (content analysis, discourse analysis, conceptual analysis, analysis of resonant events, associative experiment), all-round study of the problem makes it possible to compare the obtained results, confirm their adequacy and propose a systemic view of the problem. The proposed integrated approach stems from the fact that none of the systems is completely self-contained, none of the systems is perfect, and sometimes fails, all systems are interconnected. The more information about the problem we have, the more exactly we perceive reality.

The results of our study can be used in future information management of the situation over Falun Dafa activities.

Overview of the most popular Internet resources dedicated to the Falun Gong movement in the post- Soviet space

We have noted the quantitative and qualitative dynamics of Falun Dafa Internet MMC for the last 2 years. Thus, for the period of 2005 – 2006 years the following print (and online) editions carried out the information activities:

?Falun Dafa in the world? (http://www.falundafavmire.org.ua/) - resource comprising the Internet analogs of printed newspapers, dedicated to the philosophy and health -improving practice of the movement;

Internet newspaper ? Epoch Times? (www.epochtimes.com.ua/ru/articles/.../18708.html). The strategy of the resource on the main page is not marked, but one of the pillars is a collection of expert data on China, including investigative journalism on behalf of Falun Gong: "removal of organs in China from the followers of the Falun Gong self-perfection school and other prisoners of conscience";

Falun Dafa Information Center (http://www.faluninfo.ru/), focused on persecution of the Falun Gong practitioners by the Communist Party of China in the post-Soviet space: the concentration camps in China, selling organs from Falun Gong practitioners, methods of torture used towards Falun Gong adherents, the world community feedback to Falun Gong activities, etc.

In recent years, the Internet information space has been more expanded with Falun Gong movement. Thus, the organization has intensified communication activities in a variety of Internet genres, covering all sides of social activities:

Resource proposing " the five sets of extremely effective exercises for the transformation of the body in addition to the deep teachings. Movements are smooth and soft. They are simple and easy and do not require special physical training”;

• ?Water is the source of life? (http://blog.mail.ru/cjmmunity) - attempts of the blogger (Natalja Gromozda) to justify the doctrine of Falun Dafa as a science;
• 士魂Samurai Spirit (hatmullin.blogspot.com) - a blog dedicated to philosophy and symbolism of Falun Dafa;
• ?Falun Dafa practitioners from Bulgaria Hello from Russia!? (http://twitter.com.Pumano) – attempt to contact Falun Dafa followers. The resource contains 1 message;
• ?Falun Dafa Artists? (blogs.mail.ru / community / nebo_art) - blogger’s thoughts related to the impact of Falun Dafa philosophy on human creativity. The information in these social networks is represented by certain Falun Dafa followers; is episodic, not updated and with little discussion (almost complete lack of comments). It can be concluded that there is no professional public relations interaction between Falun Dafa movement and virtual communities.

4. In the business resources information on Falun Dafa movement is represented scantily: reference to the information resource of the movement is given in the business elite portal "UkrBiznes? (www.ukrbiznes.com/website.php?id=4982); information on the International Day of Falun Dafa (13 May ) is presented in the searching resource META (meta.ua/topic/t/21616.html).

Findings

1. Information and communicative Internet space is only now being developed by Falun Gong movement. Preference is given to official resources of the organization. Materials of network resources are relayed and retransmited.

2. The official resources outline the basis of the movement doctrine, benefits of health -improving practice, offer in the open access the books of the movement leader Li Hongzhi : "Zhuan Falun", "Explanation of the contents of the Great Law of Falun", articles with master comments . In some sections of official resources materials on the movement followers in China repression are necessarily represented.

3. Internet communication with online communities is supported only in "Sign the petition"section. This section is of clearly suggestive nature, the reading person is immediately included into "the circle of friends" for movement advocates. For example: "By signing, I would like to help stop the brutal persecution of Falun Gong in China? (http://www.faluninfo.ru/petition/index.htm); ?Petition against the persecution of Falun Gong in China. List of all signatures ?(www.falungong.ru) .

4. Information space of network communities has not yet been developed by Falun Gong movement. Information on blogs, micro-blogs, twitters and forums is irregular and inconsistent, active propaganda work is not observed in this web sector. Nevertheless, we noted sporadic attempts to organize communicative activities around Falun Dafa ideas. We consider that authorities and civil society organizations concerned should work to prevent possible information attacks by Falun Gong movement in the Web.

5. Attempts to expand the system of internet links, provide information on the movement in international business and search resources, the use of more than 30 languages to inform visitors of the network (for examplehttp://www.falundafa.org), availability of the official multilingual resources (materials of resources are mostly in Russian, English, French, Chinese languages) are the evidence of a potential expansion of Falun Dafa movement into information space.

Content analysis of the Internet information flows which touch upon the activities of Falun Gong movement

Content analysis is a formalized method of studying the text and graphic information, which consists in converting the information into quantitative and statistical analysis. It is characterized by great rigor and systematicness.

With the help of content analysis it is possible to:

• learn how far increased the number of people informed on the movement, campaign, actions etc.;
• make plausible assumptions about needs, interests and opinions of the Internet audience, the effectiveness of the perception of PR activities;
• know what response is acquired by PR campaign in the Internet;
• investigate the propensity of the Internet audience to this or any other information.

We carried out a content analysis of news and unofficial Internet resources in the period from 01.01.2010. to 15.07.2010. For our study the following incentives were selected: the motto of Falun Gong movement " Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance”, a combination of lexemes "Falun Dafa /Falun Gong.Clean. Clear.Purity. (the lexeme clear is the key to the philosophy of Falun Gong), as well as word-features, the most frequently applied to the Falun Gong movement - a sect / health-improving practice.

Findings

1. In the official news flows as well as in the unofficial Internet resources of post-Soviet Russian-speaking / Ukrainian-speaking space (blogs / micro-blogs / forums) the theme "Falun Dafa" is unpopular. On the one hand, this fact indicates a lack of information attacks of Falun Dafa on network communities, on the other, the indifferent attitude of official MMC to the problem of destructive religious movements, with a third, about the inaction of concerned state authorities and civil society organizations in the prevention of possible information aggressions in the Internet by Falun Dafa.

2. The prevailing number of messages with neutral connotation (28 out of 42) in the official internet-MMC indicates the unwillingness of concerned state authorities and civil society organizations to assess the destructive influence of Falun Gong movement on the mass consciousness.

3. In unofficial Internet resources the situation differs: from the total number of received messages (92) positively stained – 43, neutral - 8, in 28 cases the replacement of connotation (from negative to positive) is fixed. These facts indicate positive perception of Falun Gong ideas by members of network communities.

4. Therefore, though there is a low level of actualization of "Falun Dafa" subject in Internet information flows, it is still worth noting positive trends in shaping the movement image in unofficial Internet resources and neutral (indefinite, undefined) perception of this phenomenon by state authorities and civil society.

Discourse analysis of Falun Dafa communicative practices in MMC.

In modern analytical practice the category discourse becomes a significant research tool. Among the various interpretations of this category it is necessary to determine significant ones for our study

• language immerged into life [2];
• a form of social behavior [7, p. 199];
• a system of restrictions that is imposed on any number of utterances by virtue of a particular social or ideological position (eg: "feminist discourse", "religious discourse", "administrative discourse") [5].

With all the different interpretations of discourse, researchers have come to unambiguous conclusion that "discourses affect social, cultural, and global changes- environmental disasters, wars, change of political course. More locally- emergence of new social groups, changing an organization's mission, advertising policy, fashion. These developments become possible due to the development of ideas and beliefs of people – that is change of discourses "[8].

Therefore, the formation of discourses by destructive organizations is not a harmless phenomenon. On the contrary, it can have a serious impact on the change of the community consciousness, the reorientation of its system of values.

Discourse analysis focuses on social issues. It examines “the linguistic character of social and cultural processes and structures "[7, p.198]. The use of language may be ideological in nature, in order to determine the direction and technology of manipulative influence it is necessary to analyze the discourses and interpret them as social practices.

Discourses of Falun Gong movement exploit technology of lie. Lie means the concealment of truth and the substitution of the thesis and biased argumentation and half-truths and outrageous declarations of love. Lie is a special phenomenon: it is parading as truth, hiding behind the factuality, which should provoke unconditional trust; erodes public consciousness and undermines the credibility towards traditional national values. Conducted discourse analysis allowed us to identify a number of destructive discursive PR practices of Falun Gong movement in information space:

• Falun Gong adherents in Ukraine use a number of communication techniques that legitimize lie in social discourses [6].

• dirty rims technology ( to defame, to discredit someone who is out of favour, spread smear rumor, catch in financial irregularities, accuse of plagiarism, etc.); technology of besmirching (public humiliation, cleverly calculated false accusation); technology of tricks (to find dirt, to sully, and let them wash away then). Thus, each Falun Gong edition of “ Falun Dafa in the world " carries screaming accusations of the Chinese communist regime regarding creation of concentration camps, where live Falun Gong practitioners are removed from their organs.. The culprits are called at once: "The Armed Forces of the Communist Party of China are involved in harvesting organs on a large scale; "We must separate the notion of" friendship of peoples "and" friendship of punitive organs "," "Will Ukraine hand over the Chinese Falun Gong practitioners living in Ukraine to their executioners? "," Olympic Games in Beijing against the background of repression and human rights violations ". There is unreasonable labeling as “the enemy" of the Chinese Communist Party, the security forces, the Ukrainian government, which refuses to execute documents for refugee status in Ukraine for Chinese citizens allegedly persecuted at home for participating in Falun Gong movement. Thus, at the cognitive level the conflict Falun Gong movement - the State (China, Ukraine) emerges. As a basis either nonexistent or not confirmed by documents or garbled facts are taken;

• destabilization technology (to interrupt the normal course of events). Indirect call to take part in a picket in front of the Chinese Embassy in Kiev, in actions in different cities of Ukraine, aimed at preventing repression in China is contained in nearly every issue of the periodical "Falun Dafa". The publication is appealing to the past of Ukraine and Russia, compares the facts of history - the repressions in China and the Soviet state, thereby fixing in the readers' minds sympathy for the victims of Falun Gong members and negative attitudes towards any public regime, carrying out the repressive function. And the charges are automatically shifted toward the current governments of Ukraine and Russia. "Ukraine is one of the countries most affected by the Stalinist repression, then the Nazi occupation,"death camps.” If a peaceful society hadn’t remained indifferent towards those atrocities ,it may not have been so many victims. Currently, in order to save fellow practitioners in China, Falun Gong followers regard as their main and urgent task to explain the true situation in China to people all over the world. In Kiev, every day in front of the Chinese Embassy peaceful solitary pickets( a protest against repression in China )are placed . In different cities of Ukraine the actions to explain the truth about repression in China are held . Thousands of Ukrainians sign a petition against the illegal removal of organs from live Falun Gong disciples. Again and again we reiterate our call to all the kind-hearted people, all organizations in order to draw attention and support the millions of Falun Gong practitioners persecuted in China, as well as help them find freedom”. Thus, a false logical chain is formed: if your relatives have experienced repression and fascism in Ukraine, you must be a member of the Falun Gong movement or, at least, fight for its ideas. The principle of destabilization is also used during the dramatized shows on the removal of organs;

• Consolidation of functions technology (putting on the negative labels, disseminating negative nominations and wordings in MMC). Li Hongzhi’s doctrine actively advocates the division of people into the best and worst, friends and foes. This opposition is a fundamental one in any propagandistic activity. Only a decent person can enter the "circle of friends". "Those who stand for the ordinary person belong to the level of the average person, look at everything from his point of view, can not grasp the essence," "a mere mortal is a mere mortal, he can live in society of ordinary people only ," "evil thoughst are inherent for ordinary people. " Followers of Falun Gong's teaching - are already sacred, not secular, "" can see something that is inaccessible to ordinary people." In Falun Gong editions this opposition is realized in the labeling. The communist regime –“ the champion in the question of torture and the world leader in the number of executed sentences", " the evil regime", his followers -"criminals against humanity "; Committee Against Falun Gong in China –“a punitive body such as the Gestapo”; Chinese citizens demanding refugee status in Ukraine - "seekers of political asylum", the Governments of Ukraine and Russia are engaged in "diplomatic servility; Falun Gong practitioners -" martyrs, "" good and decent people, "" innocent people "; Falun Gong movement " march triumphantly around the world"; has a "wide scope of popularity around the world," "a powerful life-affirming origin";

• carousel technology ( to whirl a person, people, all society in the rapidly carousel, cause fatigue, pay attention to matters of secondary importance, to distract from the main thing). This is the basic manipulative technique used by Falun Gong movement .The main thesis of the movement reads the following: "In the late 90's the Chinese government established that 70 million Chinese practiced Falun Gong in China. The huge popularity of this spiritual practice and the deviation from the communist ideas of struggle and materialism have caused the outbreak of the brutal campaign of persecution, held by the Communist Party which is primarily realized in the removal of internal organs from Falun Gong followers”. The basis of this thesis is the fact that is difficult to verify, but its enormity distracts from the real root cause of confrontation between Falun Gong movement and Chinese government tax evasion and serious economic disruptions. From the standpoint of manipulative technologies "Carousel" "is spinned” quite competently. The mechanism is run at all levels and has hypertext structure: all FalunGong MMC(Internet, print media, flyers) offer Internet addresses, real addresses of government bodies where all who wish to support the movement may lodge a protest (of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the European Parliament, UN, etc.). The addresses of the organization itself are also given, where you can leave a signature in support of the movement, read about the history of Falun Gong and its concept. All the editions regularly specify the information on the location of meetings and gatherings of Falun Gong members. Visualization is another mechanism to influence the consciousness and subconsciousness of people: an imitation of the removal of organs, demonstrated by members of the movement in central public places - in front of the Verkhovna Rada, on St. Michael's Square, etc., and a large amount of photos of the same content on the pages of all editions of the movement; videos in the Internet . International exhibitions of paintings "Truthfulness. Compassion. Tolerance" are held, and the names of canvases presented at these exhibitions actualize the concept of martyrdom and self-sacrificingness:" Torture of woman "," WHY? ?, ? SOS! ?, ?Tragedy in China ". Many Falun Gong publications posted the picture "Golden Lotus", which depicts a young mother and her son of eight months, allegedly tortured in the dungeons of the communist China. The woman and the child are lying among yellow lotuses, covered by the yellow blanket with a Falun Gong motto on it: "Truthfulness. Compassion. Tolerance”. Carousel technique, thus, is related to the technique of recording (to penetrate into the soul and memory of the person, to bend him to the manipulator’s energy and will) .

We have not observed the whole range of manipulative techniques that range in the movement MMC . The following excerpt from the booklet of Falun Gong movement - one of many examples of linguopragmatic manipulation.

During its existence, the Communist Party has brought the world: terror, genocide, mass murder,” brainwashing”, the destruction of traditional values. The atrocities committed by the Communist Party can not be forgotten! (the principle of attacking pathetics), the Communist Party - is a global disgrace in the history of mankind; universal grief, a malignant tumor on the planet. As a result of the tough ruling of the Communist Party more than 100 million innocent people in many countries of the world died .... (principle of dirty rims, the principle of consolidation of functions)

SOS! stop the atrocities of the Communist Party of China against Falun Gong practitioners ! 36 concentration camps were found in China, where the internal organs of live people are removed for sale .... (the principle of attacking pathetics and injected anxiety)

2. "Everyday story" is used to adapt a person to the information of clearly negative content, causing the denial and to create the image of a subject, who carries out violence, murder, crimes of all sorts. On Falun Dafa Internet information channels "eyewitnesses"accounts about crimes against members of the organization are regularly presented. This method allows you to keep the illusion of objective reporting and cause emotional response of audience. For example, the pro-Falun Gong Internet Resource relays the following information (15 repetitions in various Internet resources):

Falun Gong Working Group on Human Rights submitted a report on the use of psychiatric drugs by the Chinese Communist Party as a means of torture of Falun Gong practitioners (the report was submitted to the Special Rapporteur on Torture at the meeting of 13 session of the UN Human Rights Committee).

March 11, 2010 during a meeting of 13 session of the UN Human Rights Committee, as Clearwisdom reports, the Falun Gong Working Group on Human Rights (RGFPCH) submitted a list of medical institutions, including hospitals, psychiatric hospitals and clinics that participated in the torture to the UN Special Rapporteur on torture, Professor Manfred Nowak. The professor and his staff met with three victims of torture and listened carefully to the testimonies of torture, which they were subjected. RGFPCH representatives passed the collected data about torture of the Falun Gong followers, as well as about the hospitals involved in this process, and gave some recommendations on measures to bring perpetrators to justice.

Hsuan Mei told how she was interrogated for 75 days by several groups of police officers, while she was chained to a chair.

Falun Gong follower Fang (she now lives in Finland) in July 2001 was injected with unknown drugs, which led to a state of shock, disturbance of speech, slow heartbeat, physical and psychological suffering, loss of visual acuity.

Another follower, named Wang, told how she had been force-fed by an unknown drug that caused hormonal changes in her appearance, such as: laryngeal prominence, the appearance of facial hair and the appearance of dark hair on the limbs. During nine days she was given to sleep only one hour a day. Then she was isolated in a room for three days, where loud music was played continuously, which led to a nervous breakdown.

Since time when the UN Human Rights Committee has asked the Special Rapporteur to pay particular attention to psychological torture, RGFPCH made a report on 1,088 cases of torture of Falun Gong practitioners, which included the injection of drugs. They found more than 200 hospitals, in which such tortures were used. One of the reasons why the world did not pay attention to this problem is that victims appeared outwardly normal and people around them could not see caused intellectual damages.

These drugs can be called tools that ruin the brain. Thus, health workers involved in this process, are criminals. RGFPCH requested the Special Rapporteur's comments and asked to find a way to prevent the exit of such persons abroad. Hospitals participating in such activities should be prohibited to publish scientific papers. The cases with physicians involved in the torture of Falun Gong practitioners are becoming increasingly numerous. RGFPCH suggested to the Human Rights Committee, that the report on the involvement of health professionals into the repression of dissidents should be made by the Special Rapporteur.

Confirmed facts in Falun Gong discourses are replaced by a detailed description of medical actions and details of torture. Such construction of discourse involves the formation of emotional response of the audience: a certain psychological tuning, which helps to perceive the information required by a manipulator.

Our conducted content analysis of Falun Gong Internet discourses suggests fairly intensive use of the "everyday" stories technique by Falun Dafa adherents, victims of repression by Chinese Communist Party.

3. Truth is not sought but proclaimed. Declaration supersedes the truth. A myth which should be taken on faith is formed, it is supported by similarity of arguments (factoids) and is completely self-contained phenomenon without any evidence of its compliance with the actual state of affairs.
4. This state of affairs brings together PR, advertising and propaganda. The high level of precedent in such texts (making play with famous quotations and sayings in the new discourse) is proved by their constant playing and citing in various MMC. Thus, the appeals ?SOS!? found in Falun Gong publication sound very monotonously: ?SOS! Stop the repressions against kindness! ", " Inhuman repressions against Truthfulness- Compassion- Tolerance, " People are being killed just because they strive for kindness, "" The whole world supports the Falun Gong, "" The World march in support of Falun Gong, "" 15persons are brutally murdered, ""Burned alive, "" Lie about self- immolation in the central square of China, "" Falun Gong is far from politics, "" Falun Gong is not a religion, "" Falun Gong improves health, "" Falun Gong improves health. " All these statements do not contain any additional factual evidence: they only contain messages that should be accepted on faith by audience without any analysis.

4. The use of mediators (opinion leaders). The action of this technique is based on the suggestive impact on the community and a person of circulating myths, rumors and gossip that are not derived directly from the mass media, but through meaningful for the person and known by him influential people (“opinion leaders”) - compilers of opinions and rumors. Informal personal communications are more important for people than the "official" media reports. Therefore, messages, learned from the media and passed by opinion leaders (relatives, friends, teachers, informal authorities, etc.) are more perceived by a person and have a significant suggestive influence on him. The ideas and situations can be transmitted to the grassroots level (the level of mass communications) to the extent when they are dramatic, dramatized, that is turned into an interesting and accessible to a person subject (gossip, anecdote, script, myth). In the case of launching public relations campaign manipulators only need to choose the most convenient channel, programme and time.

To a greater degree PR campaigns of Falun Gong movement have a horizontal organization - "from mouth to mouth", which currently is more credible for audience:

In some cases, under the guise of breaking news movement MMC are engaged in relaying plausible rumors that are relevant to the level of interpersonal communication. Thus, the site Falun Dafa Information Center (http://www.faluninfo.ru/) continually updates the information on the number of Falun Gong practitioners who died from repression in China. Visitors of the site are offered the information that is difficult to verify, but which is easily remembered and may be transmitted in interpersonal communications. "3383 Falun Gong practitioners have died from repression in China, over 100,000 are illegally deported to labor camps. More than 6000 are sentenced to imprisonment for up to 18 years. Hundreds of thousands are illegally detained”. Number of victims of repression is not represented by a round figure, and its constant change leads to psychic dependence of site visitors from the broadcast information.

Over the last 5 years the movement MMC turned to a collection of articles of international publishing project ?Epoch Times?, offering readers "Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party." For the first time these comments were published in a special edition of the newspaper “ Epoch Times” in September 2006. Since then the material has been presented and regularly updated on all the Internet resources of the movement. On the one hand, such exploitation of the same resonant events indicates the formation of ideological traditions of the movement, on the other - the inability to maintain the global information campaign in the Internet. This fact can and should be used by authorities and public organizations to prevent possible information attacks by Falun Gong.

5. Discourse strategy, which is very successfully used in the communicative activities of the Falun Dafa movement - forming the image through the consolidation of brand characteristics in the minds of the community. Individuality may be manifested in different forms and at different levels. Brand marketers single out five levels – circles of brand forming[3]:

In the centre - faith or belief. If you have faith, then all subsequent levels of individuality are already largely determined.

Thus, in the name of the Falun Dafa organization (which can be translated as "The Great Falun Law ": "Fa" - "law" or "principle", "Da" - "great", "gong" - " system of training ", "energy of improvement ") and in the slogan" Truthfulness. Compassion. Tolerance” there are the concepts, which are further used in all the discourses of the organization. These concepts are traditional for symbol systems of official religions, but they acquire new meaning in Falun Gong movement. See more: section "Associative analysis".

The second circle - the mission and the slogan, which expresses this mission. The slogan helps materialize the mission, and therefore there is no use in expecting the linguistic creativity in the slogan. In the concepts that form the slogan "Truthfulness. Compassion. Tolerance” the remodeling of the meanings takes place, which makes it possible to influence the subconscious of those practicing Falun Dafa (for details see: section "Associative analysis") and to determine the significant vectors of manipulations: self-sacrifice and self-denial ("to follow the divine principles, to entrust their lives," "to share understanding, to share experience, to learn Falun Gong "); propaganda of the movement ideas (" to carry out responsible mission of "a Fa-rectification Disciple; provide" a positive impact on society "); struggle with the Communist Party of China (the" disintegration of the Communist Party of China "," evil will be punished ").

The third circle is external features of the brand. It may be the packing, name and the character, who personifies the brand. In the Falun Gong movement several brands are actualized:

• Li Hongzhi, the leader and founder of the movement, is a Master, a Spiritual leader, who "did not hold any special treatment, did not accept any payment or donation, the practice should be accessible to all people, without any terms and conditions", but urged his followers to "leave the level of ordinary people ";
• the idea of improvement, physical and spiritual self-perfection;
• the idea of sacrifice in the name of the movement and the fight against organ harvesting of Falun Gong members;

• the idea of karmic punishment of movement enemies .

We noted the superposition of cognitive fields of the brands: socially recognized brand ideas (improvement, physical and spiritual self-improvement) are combined with manipulative brands of Falun Dafa followers (karmic punishment, sacrifice and struggle against the harvesting of organs from followers of the movement), which causes media viral contamination of the movement potential supporters and provokes the deformation of their world view.

The fourth circle is the nature of the brand, which is expressed in language and behavior. Demonstrative character of all the movement actions: exhibitions of paintings and photographs, physical activities in public places, pantomimes depicting the removal of organs, etc., forms the communicative image of Falun Dafa in minds of civil society.

The fifth circle is style. It should always be recognizable. Pickets in defense of victims of the Communist Party of China, the exaltation of the leader Li Hongzhi, the joint physical exercises, the collecting of signatures on letters of protest, etc. become the trade card for Falun Gong followers.

6. Discourse strategy of public indignation. There are a lot of nuances that could rouse the indignation of public. Manipulative influence in this case is based on the correct singling out of an occasion that could cause the greatest indignation. Then manipulators "stretch" a wave of indignation at the latest possible term. The direct perpetrators of such actions are spreading negative information in public transport, shops, informal Internet resources, etc. Occasions for public outrage are offered by Falun Gong leaders regularly, it is precisely they that give rise to the news flows in the MMC: hindrances to the concert tour of Shen Yun Performing Art by the Hong Kong authorities, persecution and torture of Falun Dafa practitioners, bans on the movement in China, etc.

7. Creation of myths. Myth is a manipulative technique that allows to ritualize reasonable forms of human behavior. This is a total decomposition of ways of human existence and the types of mentality. As a result, there are three figures of a social myth: living in a myth, a creator of a myth, and a certain thinker who evaluates a myth as from the standpoint of living in a myth, and from the standpoint of a creator of a myth. Distorted transcendence of a consumer of a myth can find several implementations: in the consumption of narcotic substances and the information (psychologists and experts in communication raise these phenomena in a row); in aspiration to sleep; in escape into virtual reality, artistic modeling; in nihilism, in submission to a natural character of inclinations and passions; in demonological world view and totalitarian idolization of someone. R. Barth concluded that modern society is firmly established in the myths created by the society itself and highlighted several aspects of the global mythmaking:

myths are similar to collective ideas, the myth can be read in anonymous press reports, advertising, consumer goods; myths are certain "reflections";

• these "reflections" are turned on their head: "a myth is that culture is transformed into the nature"; mythologized reality is presented as Common sense, Norm, General view;
• modern myth is presented not as a shaped long story, but only in the form of discourse ; it is not more than phraseology, corpus of phrases (stereotypes);a myth as such disappears, but there still remains something more insidiously mythical;
• the essence of a myth is determined by class interests;
• it is necessary not to disclose the myths but "to loosen" a sign itself: not to identify the meaning of utterances, but criticize the very symbol.

Myths circulating in Falun Dafa information and communication space are not even veiled, they are presented as a ready-made truth. We analyzed 13 editions of the newspaper "Falun Dafa in the world? (http://www.falundafavmire.org.ua/baozhi.html) and came to the conclusion that the consciousness of readers is mythologized already at the level of headings which are formulated as a statement of facts and repeated without any modifications from one edition to another: "Falun Dafa - way back to "Truthfulness. Compassion. Tolerance”, "Violent persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China," "Bloody removal of organs", "People are persecuted for their faith, truth, kindness, patience "," What is the price of silence in Ukraine "," Falun Dafa is out of politics, business and religion "," Field of energy occurring while practicing Falun Gong. "

8. Suggestive and linguistic nature of Falun Gong MMC.

Suggestion is understood as a form of interpersonal and intergroup communication in which information is transferred through partially extramental, directional signal on the verbal and / or non-verbal levels. Suggestion differs from conviction by reduced level of criticality and the need for verification of information. Suggestive and linguistic principle of discourse organization of Falun Dafa MMC is fundamental, so long as

•appeals or requirements contained in speech initiate action, and this is exactly its main function;
• it helps to guide consistently the actions of an individual, not only through long-term target strategies, but also through the proclamation of completely utopian ideas, mainly through the appraisal, judgement by means of advantageous manipulation or effective motivation;
• speech substitutes for action;
• speech legitimizes actions;
• in speech a person portrays his actions in a favorable light or brings a verbal base under his own action or inaction;.
• speech is itself the action: every malicious lie, any perjury, every single offensive utterance, they emphasize the criminal nature of actions initiated by the words.

The principles of suggestive organization of discourse are the following:

• Hypnotic style. Discourses rivet the attention, they are impossible to tear away from. Contain hidden commands. Discourses are utterly available for understanding, compact and efficient, easy to remember, and as a result a person acts according to what was just read. Hypnotic style develops dependence of a person on one or another text.
• Hypnotic "style" is effective communication.
• While creating suggestive discourses it involves global thinking and attempts to implement the most impossible dreams.
• Suggestion involves the conscious use of words to bring people into the mental state of concentration in which they tend to perform the predetermined commands.
• Suggestive discourses cause the release in brain of serotonin and endorphins - chemical messengers that cause pleasure.

First of all, the most suggestive exposure opportunity has the audience that seeks to resolve some problems:

1. People actively seek information about the problem relating to them, and will record the information coming to them unexpectedly, offering relief from the problem.

2. Suggestive influence power is determined by the degree to which people believe that there are barriers that restrict their ability to carry out their plans.

3. The possibility of suggestive influence is determined by the level of involvement - the degree to which people feel themselves involved in a certain situation and decide whether to take action and how.

4. Suggestive communication is based on a radically new communicative principles, one of which is: where before there was advertising, today it should be empathy. Suggestive influence is the most effective in those communicative communities where interactive relationships are oriented towards credibility, sympathy, compassion and understanding that reduces the level of criticality in the perception of information.

On the existence of empathy as a key component of the MMC discourse organization may suggest answers to the questions proposed in the scheme:

Whether the materials of emotional nature are included into the resource?

How quickly the feedback from the resource audience is established?

Does the resource change visitors’ attitude to the world and each other?

Whether the resource is aimed at the formation of "own circle"?

Whether the number of resource visitors increased?

Whether the promises of help, understanding, compassion are heard?

For the study we took a table of contents of the last three editions of the weekly "Minghui? (http://www.ru-enlightenment.org). This material is not chosen by accident, because, first, the contents are the strong position of any discourse, and secondly, it always reflects information and communication attitudes of organizers’ publications, and thirdly, the regularities of data presentation are determined by "cognitive code", broadcast in the consciousness of information consumers .

Comments to the analysis:

• Examined fragment is of obviously manipulative nature. In this text fragment of 676 words we fixed 124 units of the manipulative nature (the list is far from complete, because we studied the basic communication areas of manipulation). Moreover, of the manipulative nature are basic headings of contents - Facts about organ harvesting (2 - 5 pages); Facts of repression (5 - 42 pages); Dafa events in the world (43 - 68 pages);EXCHANGE OF EXPERIENCE (68 - 116 pp.) .As we can see, 1 / 3 of the entire publication is dedicated to the facts of repression, the material of this kind always has a resonant character, and hence implies increased readers’ interest and is relied on the audience empathy;

• usage of key words, whose meaning are concrete, the contents of which are easy to visualize significantly increases the suggestion effect. Opposition view of the world, the distinction between insiders and outsiders, recorded at the level of contents, reformat the worldview of readers, as opposition thematic groups noted by us testify: the strength of Falun Dafa teaching - repression against Falun Dafa followers, salvation and improving of practitioners - karmic impact on enemies of the movements, "insiders’circle"of Falun Dafa practitioners - enemies;

• emotional glut of contents is also an indicator of the manipulative text. We recorded 16 units of emotional nature. It is worth noting that the editorial board of the magazine violates the traditions of the genre - the table of contents does not imply an emotional coloring;

• in the table of contents the using of rhetorical, interrogative and imperative patterns is enough single-piece phenomenon. The observable text is oversaturated with these units: we recorded 22 hidden commands (rhetorical questions and patterns that stimulate inner reflection - 3; imperative patterns - 19) on 60 syntectic structures. Thus, the syntactic structure of contents itself is suggestive, because at the readers’ subconscious level it imprints far from harmless latent commands;

• in contents names and surnames are practically not mentioned, this also violates the traditions of the genre. Using indefinite structures in sources of information identification (total 12 units) also has a suggestive effect on the readers.

Findings

1. MMC discourses of Falun Gong movement are of suggestive-linguistic nature, and are built on communication techniques, legitimizing a lie: of dirty rims, blackening (public humiliation, cleverly calculated false accusation); tricks (to find mud, to sully, and let then clear their names); technique of destabilization (to interrupt normal course of events); consolidation of function technology (putting on the negative labels, disseminating negative nominations and wordings in MMC); carousel technology ( to whirl a person, people, all the society in the rapidly carousel, to cause fatigue, pay attention to matters of secondary importance, to distract from the main thing).

2. The mechanism of Falun Gong MMC’s influence on a person is similar to advertising, since the purpose of Falun Dafa information and communication activities is to make information consumers feel dissatisfied with their lives, emerging situation, health, social and public events, and stimulate the desire to change something. Advertising of Falun Dafa communicative acts is not accidental: to attract adherents leaders of the movement must offer something new, which was not available in the official religion, to exploit the most important motives and human needs. According to A. Maslow pyramid these are the initial needs: security, recognition, satisfaction of physical needs. Therefore, the exploitation of the concepts health, life- saving, karmic retribution forms communication flows in Falun Dafa MMC and is of systemic nature.

3. In our research only some discourse strategies used by Falun Gong MMC are demonstrated. Studying the full range of manipulative strategies is the subject of a separate study. Nevertheless, we can conclude that the goal of all discourse strategies is to cause "mass", "out of collective" behavior that leads to the spontaneous transfer of information, a subject acts, practically, without a sense of personal control over the situation.

4. A person in this case, unconsciously obeys the patterns of behavior of other people. 9. In Falun Dafa MMC the movement's image is formed through the consolidation of brand characteristics in the minds of the community. Activities for the positioning of the movement are purposeful. All brand aspects of Falun Dafa movement: the faith and belief, mission and slogan; external features of the brand, brand character, expressed in language and behavior, always recognizable style are aimed at remodelling language awareness, language worldview, and further cognitive remodeling of community in ways that benefit Falun Gong ideologists. We found the superposition of cognitive brand fields: socially recognized brand ideas (health improvement, physical and spiritual self-improvement) are combined with manipulative brands of Falun Dafa followers (karmic punishment, self-sacrificingness and struggle against the harvesting of organs from movement followers), which forms media-viral contamination of movement potential supporters and deformation of their world view.

Associative analysis of the conceptual system of Falun Dafa movement

2. Manipulative effect lies in filling the global cultural concepts with new meanings, defined by manipulators through alignment of associative series, not typical for traditional national cultures.

3. To the mentioned concepts the abstract semantic series are lined up. In none of the investigated sources the interpretation of the slogan "Truthfulness. Compassion. Patience " was given, the essence of the slogan was not discussed by online communities, indicating that meanings are imposed on Falun Gong practitioners. The specific interpretation of the concepts is replaced by vague associations which are, firstly, have the suggestive potential and at the subconscious level form the movement followers’ ideas raised by manipulators; secondly, serve the purposes of mental infection, which is manifested not through the conscious adoption of any information or samples of behavior, but through direct transfer of a particular emotional state.

4. Associative filling of the slogan "Truthfulness. Compassion. Patience ", proposed in Falun Gong MMC, does not coincide with the associations, typical for the Slavic language awareness.

First, it emphasizes the uniqueness, novelty and globality of the idea of

Patience ",which is interpreted as" the turn of the Law Wheel; the Great Law; " the unique doctrine "that has" fundamental, peaceful and compassionate nature "," has a profound meaning, ", " spiritual way of existence”, " meditation technique with the help of exercises to improve physical health, as well as moral and spiritual purity. " This doctrine "calms mind, harmonizes the psyche, opens energy channels, improves the health of practitioners.”

Secondly, the key meaning of such concepts as truth, compassion .patience fundamentally differs from the concepts inherent to Slavic consciousness.

If in the Slavic linguistic consciousness the philosophical problem of truth (its completeness, absoluteness or relativeness) is solved, it means that the correlation of worldly, historical and religious truth is considered; in the interpretation offered by the Falun Gong teaching, the truth is seen as a phenomenon which resists the ideology of the Communist Party, is exclusively inherent to the ideas of the movement, and is the ultimate goal of all Falun Gong practitioners.

The filling of the concept compassion (kindness) is also qualitatively different in the Slavic and Falun Gong linguistic consciousness . In Falun Gong ideology, kindness is understood as adherence and obedience to the movement ideas; the movement followers are kind, the Communist Party representatives are evil. All dissenters will get "karmic retribution", and the kind will be rewarded. Thus, the concept of kindness acts as a manipulative "bait" and is used by the Falun Gong movement with the aim of encouraging followers to act in a way that is required by manipulators. In the Slavic linguistic consciousness the concept of kindness is seen as an eternal moral value, a significant characteristic of human life and the principle of life and world order.

The concept of forbearance (patience) in the Falun Gong ideology is associated primarily with self-denial, denial of human aspirations and passions, sufferings for the sake of the movement ideas, ability to experience grief. Thus, the followers of the movement are programmed to self-denial, struggle and blind performance of tasks. In the Slavic linguistic identity the concept of patience is considered as a basis for fruitful work and a personal quality of a person.

Thus, associative fullness of concepts truth, kindness, patience in the Falun Gong ideology has a manipulative nature, and at the subconscious level it develops in movement followers the readiness to sacrifice themselves, struggle, complete subordination to the Falun Gong ideology.

5. All considered concepts of justice, responsibility, insight, wisdom, truth, kindness, patience are formed on the basis of thematic series " Falun Gong mission" and "friends and enemies”. Falun Gong mission is defined consistently in all the MMC and is included in the following provisions: "to share understanding, share experience, learn Falun Gong"; "follow heavenly principles”, to entrust own lives, “to perform responsible mission of " Fa-rectification Disciples”; to exert "a positive impact on society "," disintegration of the Communist Party of China, evil will be punished. " As it is evident from the associative series, the idea of self-cultivation is formed very vaguely, while the ideas of the necessity for Falun Gong followers to sacrifice themselves and the collapse of the Communist Party of China are unambiguously advanced.

Thematic complex "friends and enemies” provides manipulative influence through the formation of stereotypes, which affect the human consciousness in the following aspects:

• a person does not live according to the laws of intellect and logic;
• every person has his own stereotypes;
• negative stereotypes are opinions, memories, prejudices "against" promoted object; and rarer positive stereotypes are "for";
• human brain is arranged in such a way that a negative stereotype is almost always prevails over the positive;
• the number of typical negative stereotypes is very limited;
• stereotypes significantly influence the perception ie a person sees, hears and feels only what he wants;
• stereotypes often make a person's behavior irrational, illogical to the outsider, having other stereotypes;
•we should take into account the biases, prejudices, fears, preferences, that is something that can be described by the term "stereotype".

Communicative activity of Falun Gong movement exploits biases, fears, prejudices, and is not built on change but on consolidating the stereotypes. So, all those who belong to the "circle of friends" should " Have Solid Righteous Thoughts While Facing Sickness Karma; Not Be Attached to How We Feel;” implement" The Angels' Wish; they can be" Entrusted of Life."Circle of friends” is good: like-minded people," teaching followers "who" tend to be more good people, the purpose is to achieve perfection and enlightenment. "Representatives of the "circle of friends" are always the victims who are subjected to "suffering and injustice on a large scale." Circle of enemies "is evil, its representatives" had sunk into the abyss of delusion”, are subject to" the principle of karmic retribution”, they have only one way of salvation: "get out of control of the evil party."

6. Thus, deconceptualization of concepts forms the basis for communicative resonance events that could attract supporters to the Falun Gong movement : the suffering of the practitioners, the extraction of organs from followers of the movement, the persecution by the authorities.

General conclusions

The results of all phases of our comprehensive analysis (content analysis, discourse analysis, conceptual analysis, analysis of resonant events, association experiment) of MMC discourses of Falun Gong movement have allowed us to make the following conclusions.

Current Situation

1. In formal and informal Internet resources of post-Soviet Russian-speaking/ Ukrainian-speaking space (blogs / micro-blogs / forums) the theme "Falun Dafa" is unpopular. It is the evidence of several tendencies: 1) lack of Falun Dafa information attacks into online communities 2) the indifferent attitude of official MMC to the problem of destructive religious movements 3) inactivity of governmental bodies and civil society organizations concerned in the prevention of possible information aggressions on the Internet by Falun Dafa. This fact is confirmed by the existence of reports with neutral connotation (28 out of 42) in the official internet-MMC. At the same time in online communities there is a positive perception of Falun Dafa ideas (we recorded 79 reports with positive connotations out of 92).

2. Internet information and communicative space of Falun Gong movement is just beginning to open up: 1) the movement official resources are actively created; presented material, for the most part, is relayed and repeated, not enough updated, 2) the prerogative is given to official information: the statement of foundations of the movement doctrine, the benefits of health-improving practices, the movement leader Li Hongzhi’s books: "Zhuan Falun", "Explanation of the contents of the Great Law of Falun," the materials on the repression in China in relation to the movement followers ; 3) Internet communication with network communities is supported in the sections "Sign the petition" which have a clearly pronounced suggestive nature.

3. Falun Gong MMC discourses are of suggestive and linguistic nature and are built on communication techniques, which legitimize lie that allows to increase the advertising impact of Falun Gong on a person. Like advertising, Falun Dafa discourses count on the audience, who tends to resolve any problem: people are actively seeking information about issues concerned to them; the suggestive power of the impact depends on the degree to which people believe that there are obstacles that limit their ability to perform their plans; people experiencing problems seek to join “the circle of friends "who can help in resolving the situation; suggestive influence is the most effective in those communicative communities where interactive relationships are adjusted to empathy : trust, sympathy, compassion and understanding, which reduce the level of criticality in the perception of information.

4. Discourse strategies used in Falun Dafa MMC(intellectual reception, symbolic systems consolidation, psychic contagion, emotional resonance, the implementation of the theory of UCP, consolidation of brand characteristics in the minds of the community, etc.) are manipulative in nature and are capable of causing "massive", "non collective "behavior that leads to the spontaneous transfer of information, which is distributed mostly in the horizontal plane : by" word of mouth ", a subject acts, practically, without a sense of personal control over the situation.

5. Falun Dafa discourse strategies are aimed at media-virus infection of post-Soviet community: the introduction of hidden concepts in the form of an ideological code. As a media-virus shell in the Falun Dafa ideology are used resonant events (eyewitness accounts of repression), a system of ideas (health improvement, self-improvement), visual images (pantomimes), the slogan "Truthfulness. Benevolence. Forbearance”, semantic content of which is controlled by Falun Dafa ideologists etc. In the movement information space an attractive media-virus shell is created. Media-viruses produced by Falun Dafa movement are able to change the world view of an individual, network community as well as the nation on the whole.

6. Manipulative reformatting of the national world views in the Falun Gong discourses is based on filling global cultural concepts (justice, responsibility, insight, wisdom, truth, kindness, patience) with new meanings, defined by manipulators, through the alignment of associative series, not typical for traditional national cultures. The associative filling of the slogan "Truthfulness. Benevolence. Forbearance” proposed by Falun Gong MMC does not coincide with associations, typical for the Slavic language consciousness and is manipulative in nature, at the subconscious level replacing the cultural stereotypes of national culture by modifying the language consciousness and linguistic picture of the nation it develops in movement followers the readiness for sacrifice, struggle, total subordination to the Falun Gong ideology.

Deconceptualization of concepts forms the communicative basis for resonance events that could attract supporters to Falun Gong movement: sufferings of practitioners, the removal of organs from the movement followers, the persecution by the authorities.

7. Conducted comprehensive analysis gives grounds to state that in the Falun Dafa discourse cognitive paradigms " Falun Gong Mission " and "friends – enemies” are systematically fixed. The Falun Gong mission is defined consistently in all the MMC and is concluded in a vague idea of self-improvement, in need for full self-sacrifice of Falun Gong practitioners and in facilitating the disintegration of the Communist Party of China. Thematic complex "friends – enemies” provides manipulative influence through the formation of stereotypes, which program the human mind. “Circle of friends "is good: like-minded people, "teaching followers "are always the victims who are subjected to "suffering and injustice on a large scale." Circle of enemies "is evil, its representatives" had sunk into the abyss of delusion,” are subject to" the principle of karmic retribution”, they have only one way of salvation : "get out of control of the evil party."

8. Suggestion and manipulation are the main forms of Falun Gong movement communication: the organization takes regular actions aimed at manipulating public consciousness, including dissemination of unreliable, fragmentary or untimely information. Such information and communicative actions pose a threat to national security of Ukraine and the stability of society.

Threats

1. Possible: intensification of information and communication activities of Falun Dafa movement in online communities; systematization of information and aggressive propagandistic activities, expansion of options in the search resources.

2. Choosing the right target audience by Falun Dafa ideologists ( people who experience problems) will facilitate the dissemination of movement ideas and active involvement of community members in its activities.

3. Possible: the global spread of Falun Dafa media-virus in post- Soviet space according to the principle of chaos( a butterfly beating its wings in China can cause a hurricane in New York). The production of all kinds of resonance events and their broadcasting in MMC could exacerbate the spread of media-viruses: the faster the stronger they attract attention and arouse interest.

4. The formation of new associative series to the global concepts of linguistic consciousness (truth, kindness, patience, health) can help to change the ideological code of every nation, modification of its language consciousness and linguistic world view, which eventually may lead to a global manipulation of community.

5. Actualization of thematic complex "friends - enemies" implies exfoliating mass consciousness, increased information attacks and information aggressions at the level of official sources as well as directly in online communities.

Methods of counteraction

1.Public authorities and civil society organizations concerned should work to prevent possible information attacks by Falun Gong web. This requires positioning anti-cultic and anti-destructive ideas in online communities; expansion of options in search resources containing negative component of the assessment of Falun Dafa activity; creation of forums, blogs, etc. of anti-Falun Gong orientation; conducting online conferences with opinion leaders; launching virus anti-Falun Gong advertisements with high information rate that can cause emotional resonance of web visitors, etc.

2. Work with target audience who has some problems: the creation of Internet resources of trust, which provide an opportunity for dialogue with well-known doctors, lawyers, economists, psychologists; intensification of work of legal and medical clinics that provide free services to population; the formation of alternative resonance events that could attract wide audience, etc.

3. It is necessary to identify targets of Falun Gong media-viruses : not of particular acts of the movement but the ideology itself; to create information flows that prevent media-virus contamination of network communities; to create ironic discourses that devalue media-virus ideology; provide information and communicative resistance not to viral shell but to host organism producing virus; to identify affected systems in the community and to organize in this area information and communication activities; use the global dialogue as a strategy against media-viruses.

4. It is necessary to consolidate the concepts inherent for national cultures in online communities and MMC; to develop significant cognitive meanings in the minds of the nation; to prepare materials of anti-Falun Gong orientation, using associative series, which ,on the one hand, emphasize the value of the national idea and traditional religion, and on the other, cause negative perception of the Falun Dafa ideology.

5. It is necessary to use the suggestive and linguistic technologies, which remodel the essence of the opposition "friends – enemies", unite net communities, produce a constructive dialogue.

6. Civil society organizations, government agencies, institutions of official religions should

• demonstrate their reliability and success in overcoming the difficult time: continuously and with the help of various "indicators" (information events, actions of the company, interviews with top officials;

• generate positive occasions and strongly emphasize the activity in the struggle for each person during active Falun Dafa information and communication actions and if negative news dominates;

• formulate and convey to the members of the society the basic position concerning Falun Dafa actions which cause public response: how the difficulties which were the basis for resonance events are to be overcome and what is being done to address any public concern, etc.;

• adhere to the "open palms" tactics, when representatives of state bodies, public organizations demonstrate their willingness to understand a complex problem, to answer difficult questions, bearing fruit;

•in critical communication situations develop their version of events, the subsequent repositioning, etc.;

• not follow the “remain in the shadow” strategy, not responding to MMC requests and Falun Dafa statements or giving the answer "no comment". This is fraught with the growth of various kinds of negative rumors;

• wage PR campaigns(which become a key component of the entire communication policy of the state) of top officials of state bodies and public organizations involved in combating the destructive cult influence: during information attacks the activity of organizations’ leaders is much more important than at the usual time; the head becomes a major newsmaker, reputation guarantor and mouthpiece of state, organization activity;
• actualize the solidarity of structures, which oppose Falun Dafa actions;

• respond rapidly to early signals of the misinformation of the public;

• emphasize the constant: to stress the strengths of the national culture, traditions, etc.;

• in the first days after black PR actions mobilize a minimum of three resources: social organizations, loyal journalists and public authorities;

• analyze the situation concerning Falun Gong information attacks and understand who is the customer of information attack, what goals pursues the organizer, what resources are at his disposal (information, financial, administrative, human, technological, etc.), then choose a strategy to respond to a crisis situation;

• work out different options for preventing and averting information attacks by Falun Gong;

• develop MMC opinion;

• arrange a telephone hotline, monitor "hot" topics and issues, and publish solutions and additional information in the Internet-resources;

• scan MMC information fields and informal communication channels (forums and blogs).
